Celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Nov. 18

Wednesday, Nov. 18, schools across Menlo Park will join students and families throughout California in celebrating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. This annual event honors Ruby Bridges, who at just six years old became the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans in 1960. Her courage and resilience continue to inspire generations of students to stand up for equity and inclusion.

The state of California recognizes Nov. 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, but it will be observed Wednesday, Nov. 18, since Nov. 14 falls on a weekend this year. 

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day provides an opportunity for students, families, and school communities to walk together while learning about the importance of civil rights and student voice in shaping a more inclusive future. The event encourages active transportation while also sparking meaningful conversations about history, courage and the role students can play in creating change.

Schools can participate by organizing group walks, hosting classroom discussions, or integrating Ruby Bridges’ story into lessons and activities. Families are encouraged to join their students in walking, biking or rolling to school to mark this important day of reflection and action.
