Be prepared for rainy season!
Published on March 10, 2026
Don’t let rain hinder your confidence in biking to your destinations! With the wet season coming soon, review these tips to be prepared and confident for rainy days.
Check the weather before you leave: Review your local forecast before leaving the house and be prepared for wet conditions if rain is expected. Consider taking transit or carpooling instead of biking if the weather conditions are beyond your comfort.
Dress for dryness and comfort: To stay dry, consider wearing waterproof clothing. Consider using gloves, shoe covers or a helmet liner to keep your extremities dry. Equip your bike with fenders to avoid road spray on your clothes.
Stay visible: Rain can reduce visibility, so it’s important to ensure that others can see you while riding. California Vehicle Code 21201 requires front lights and rear reflectors when riding your bike. To be more visible, it is highly recommended to use rear lights, wear reflective clothing and avoid wearing dark colors.
Adjust for safety: Rainy weather may change road conditions. Slow down, especially when turning a corner or breaking. Brake earlier and gently and increase the following distance between you, other bicyclists or vehicles.
