Over the next few months lets stay active and practice some safety tips to keep our community safe for everyone. If you must drive to school, make sure to slow down in school zones. Slowing down by just 5 or 10 miles per hour makes a big safety difference for children walking and biking. Obeying school zone speeds keeps children safe on their way to school.
Walking and rolling to school is an excellent habit to build early in life for both our health and the environment. Walking, biking, and rolling to and from school can give students two-thirds of the daily activity they need and reduce traffic congestion near the school. Taking part in a walking school bus or a bike train is a great way to start.
Need more motivation? The San Mateo County Office of Education is hosting the Golden Sneaker Contest! The Golden Sneaker Contest encourages students to shift their travel modes and motivates schools across San Mateo county to reduce their carbon footprint. From Feb. 13–March 17, students can work together to track how many times they bike, walk, carpool or use transit to get to school. The classroom with the highest number of walkers, bikers, carpoolers and transit riders from Feb. 13–March 17 wins the challenge. The grand prize is the Golden Sneaker Trophy and a chance to win a special visit from Rookie, the San Mateo County Police Department’s therapy dog! Talk to your school and teacher about the Golden Sneaker Contest.
