Children trick or treating at door

As Halloween draws near, the Menlo Park Police Department encourages everyone to keep safety in mind while enjoying the festivities. Here are some reminders to help ensure a fun and safe celebration:

Prepare before heading out

  • Pick costumes and footwear that allow kids to move comfortably.
  • Choose lighter or brighter colors when possible.
  • Make sure costumes are made from flame-resistant materials.
  • Add reflective tape or fabric to increase visibility after dark.

Tips for Halloween night

  • Turn on outdoor lights and clear walkways of anything that could cause someone to trip.
  • Plan for an adult to accompany children or make arrangements for children to walk in a group — no solo trick or treating.
  • Carry a flashlight, glow stick or other light source, as well as a cellphone.
  • Cross only at corners or crosswalks, never mid-block.
  • Check all treats before allowing children to eat them.
  • Eat only items that are factory sealed or in their original packaging.

To report suspicious behavior, call the non-emergency line at (650) 330-6300. For emergencies, always dial 9-1-1. Wishing everyone a safe, fun and brightly lit Halloween!
