At its May 19 meeting, the Menlo Park City Council adopted the City’s first Anti-Displacement Plan, marking a significant step to combat the displacement of its residents.
Displacement occurs when people are forced to relocate from their homes or neighborhoods due to factors outside of their control. The City's Anti-Displacement Plan will primarily focus on creating strategies that support tenant protections, with the intention of creating safeguards for community members against rising housing costs and the threat of eviction. This will include the following priorities that staff will initiate over the next three years: Priority #1: Creating a rental assistance program Priority #2: Creating a legal assistance program Priority #3: Expanding existing Just Cause Eviction protections for renters Priority #4: Implementing a tenant anti-harassment ordinance Priority #5: Expanding the City's home preservation program Priority #6: Creating a rental registry Priority #7: Facilitating a workforce development program The plan received support from all City Council members and community residents, who emphasized the importance of quickly and efficiently implementing all strategies to address ongoing displacement.
