Alterations to Single-Family Home Permit Submittal Requirements

Definition: Per CRC Section R202, an alteration is any construction, retrofit, or renovation to an existing structure other than repair or addition that requires a permit. Also, a change in a building, electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system that involves an extension, addition, or change to the arrangement, type or purpose of the original installation that requires a permit.

Repairs are reconstruction, replacement, or renewal of any part of an existing building for the purpose of its maintenance or to correct damage.  

Additions are an extension or increase in floor area, number of stories, or height of a building or structure. Repairs and additions may require their own separate permits, or may be combined with an alteration depending on the situation. Please consult City staff for additional guidance.
