Request for a New or a Change of Address

All requests for new addresses to a parcel or a change to an existing address associated with a parcel are required to be approved the the Building Official. Please see the City of Menlo Park Municipal Code Chapter 12.28 requirements for the numbering of buildings.

it is important to note:

  • Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are assigned the same street address as the primary residence, followed by a unit designation (e.g., Unit A). If there are multiple ADUs on the property, they will be assigned sequentially (e.g., Unit B, Unit C, etc.).
  • All applicants proposing new subdivisions or multi-family buildings where there is only one address on an existing parcel are required to have have their proposed addresses approved during the the discretionary review/entitlement process. This requirement is to ensure address consistency throughout the entire permitting process. Please contact the City's project planner or the PermitTeam to start the approval process.

The Submittal Process

To request a new address assignment or modify an existing address, please submit, via email to the PermitTeam, the following:

  • A signed Address Change Request Form completed by the property owner.
  • A site plan showing the layout of the existing and/or proposed structure(s).

An address assignment fee $129.00 will be charged once the submittal is complete. The permit Technician assigned to the request will coordinate payment by the applicant.

The Review Process:

  1. The proposed address is reviewed by the Building official for compliance to the requirements of the Municipal Code and is consistent with the existing street numbering sequence;
  2. If the proposed new requested address is not consistent with the requirements of the Municipal Cade and existing numbering sequence, the applicant will be notified via email of the denial with an explanation for the denial and in some cases, proposed alternate addresses.
  3. Once the proposed address has been approved by the Building official, the proposed new address is routed to for approval to 
    • The Menlo Park Police Department (MPPD);
    • The Menlo Park Fire Protection District (MPFPD);
  4. Once  MPPD and MPFPD have approved the applicant will be notified of the approval via email and notification of the new address is sent to:
  • MPPD
  • MPFPD
  • The U.S. Post Office;
  • PG&E
  • ATT&T
  • ComCast
