The information below is intended to explain how to request a Building permit extension if the permit is about to expire or reinstatement if it has expired. The City's permit tracking software sends an automated "Notice of Pending Expiration" email to the permit holder 30 days prior to an issued permit's expiration date.
A building permit application for any proposed work shall be considered to have been abandoned 180 days after the application date unless the application is actively pursued or the permit issued. Actively pursued means to respond to plan check comments, provide verification of approvals by outside agencies, submittal of requested documents and/or payment of fees in less than 180 days. The building official is authorized to grant one or more extensions of time for additional periods not to exceed 90 Days or 180 days, depending on project scope, when justifiable cause is demonstrated. – CBC 105.3.2 and CRC R105.4
An issued building permit is considered to be expired if:
