Reminder: gas-powered landscaping equipment restrictions

Leaves blown by leaf blower

Since July 1, 2024, Menlo Park's Zero Emission Landscaping Equipment (ZELE) Ordinance has prohibited the use of gas-powered leaf blowers and string trimmers throughout the city. The ordinance helps reduce air and noise pollution while supporting a cleaner, healthier community.

The ordinance applies to residential, commercial and public properties. Property owners are responsible for ensuring that landscaping work performed on their property complies with the ordinance, regardless of who is operating the equipment.

If you observe the active use of prohibited gas-powered equipment, reports can be made by calling the Menlo Park Police Department's non-emergency line at 650-330-6300. Because officers must directly observe a violation before issuing a citation, reports should be made while the equipment is actively being used and response is subject to officer availability. Reports may also be submitted through ACT Menlo Park, and an informational letter will be sent to the property address.

Violations may result in administrative citations, with fines increasing for repeat violations.

Residents can also help spread awareness by requesting a free ZELE yard sign for their property while supplies last.
