Every year, cities across the nation celebrate the positive impacts that public works departments have on improving the quality of life of many communities. This year's theme is "Rooted in Service, Powered by Community." The City's Public Works Department (Department) is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving the public infrastructure, including streets, water and stormwater systems, public buildings, its fleet, trees, parks and the transportation system. The Department's mission is to maintain and improve the City's public infrastructure in an efficient and sustainable manner for the health and safety of the community. At the May 19 City Council meeting, Menlo Park Mayor Betsy Nash will recognize the week of May 17–23 as National Public Works Week and ask that the public recognize the invaluable contributions of these dedicated professionals, as they continually strive to improve the quality of life for us all.
