Proposed building code changes will help homes replacing electric panels smoothly transition to all-electric systems. To support property owners in preparing for electric appliances, the City Council will consider proposed changes to the Menlo Park Municipal Code during the Jan. 28 City Council meeting. The proposed requirements aim to ensure homes are ready for future building electrification and electric vehicle charging.
The proposed changes are straightforward: if you’re replacing or upgrading your electric panel, you’d be required to include sufficient space on your panel for a fully electric home. This code would only impact those who are replacing electric panels and is designed to equip Menlo Park homes for a seamless transition to all-electric systems in preparation for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s ban on the sale of gas equipment, starting with gas water heaters in 2027.
