San Mateo County is seeking volunteers for the 2026 One Day Homeless Count, scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026 from 5–10 a.m. The biennial effort helps local and regional leaders better understand homelessness across the county and guides decisions about funding, services and long-term policy solutions.

The One Day Homeless Count is a federally required snapshot of the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single morning. Volunteers document individuals living outdoors, in vehicles or in other locations not meant for habitation. The data collected plays a key role in determining how federal and state resources are allocated and where services are most needed.

Volunteers will walk or drive assigned routes and record observations using a smartphone app and will be provided training, breakfast and coffee. All volunteers are required to complete a brief virtual training in advance of the count.

More information on the event can be found at this San Mateo County news release.
