Walking and biking tips for winter break
Published on December 09, 2025
Daylight saving time began Sunday, Nov. 2. With it getting darker earlier, now is a great time for families to review safety tips for walking and biking. The Menlo Park Safe Routes to School program encourages families to follow the safety tips below to enjoy an active and safe holiday season.
1. Be prepared for early darkness by being visible
With the time change and shorter daylight hours, it is important to remain visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially during nighttime or early morning hours. People biking should have a front white light and a rear red light equipped on their bicycles, as required by law. People walking can carry a flashlight or use clip-on LEDs to be more visible.
2. Check out the Safe Routes to School suggested routes
The program has developed a citywide map of suggested routes for people walking and biking in Menlo Park. The map identifies low-volume, low-speed streets that may be more comfortable for people traveling on foot or by bike. To see more, view the interactive Walk and Roll map.
3. Review walking and biking safety lessons
Winter break is a good time to refresh safety basics. Remind kids to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. By law, people biking should ride in the same direction as traffic and use hand signals. For more information, visit the Menlo Park Safe Routes to School resources page to access safety and educational materials geared toward children.
4. Find a buddy
If appropriate for a child to travel without a parent or caretaker, encourage them to walk or bike with a friend. The buddy system can provide comfort and company when traveling to and from school. Menlo Park’s Safe Routes to School Community Supporter businesses also provide safe spaces for kids to wait if they do not feel safe outside.
5. Dress warm
Winters in Menlo Park can be chilly or damp. Layered clothing and water-resistant jackets help keep kids comfortable while walking and biking. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are also important, especially for muddy pathways and puddles.
By following these simple safety tips, Menlo Park families can enjoy an active and fun winter break. Find additional resources and learn more about the Safe Routes to School program here.
