Sand Hill Road Water Main Replacement Project

Menlo Park Municipal Water (MPMW) provides water to approximately 20,500 residents through 4,300 service connections within two service areas: the Upper Zone (providing water to the Sharon Heights area) and the Lower Zone (providing water to areas east of El Camino Real). MPMW’s Water System Master Plan (WSMP) identifies and recommends capital improvement projects to maintain the water system within its service area. The Water Main Replacement Project is a recurring project that involves replacing aging pipelines that are at the end of their useful life.

The Sand Hill Road Water Main Replacement Project (Project), identified in the WSMP, will replace approximately 4,300 linear feet of aging asphalt concrete water main with 12-inch and 16-inch-high density polyethylene (HDPE) mains. The limit of work spans Sand Hill Road (from 2950 Sand Hill Road to Monte Rosa Drive) and Monte Rosa Drive (between Sand Hill Road and Siskiyou Drive.)

Following the replacement of the water main, the Project also includes signing, striping, and pavement rehabilitation (including asphalt resurfacing and slurry seal beyond the utility trench) as described and illustrated below.

  • Full pavement restoration of the utility trench
  • 3-inch grind and overlay from curb to curb (from 2900 to 2950 Sand Hill Rd.)
  • Slurry seal from curb to curb: west-bound Sand Hill Road (from 2900 Sand Hill Rd. to Monte Rosa Drive) and Monte Rosa Drive (from Sand Hill Road to Siskiyou Drive)

  • Phase I: Monte Rosa Drive. Currently under construction until August
  • Phase II: Sand Hill Road. From mid-August until September. To minimize traffic impacts, this phase will be performed at night (9 p.m.-6 a.m.).
  • Phase III: 2900 to 2950 Sand Hill Road. From September to December.
  • Phase IV: The final phase of construction will be performed in spring 2027 and includes asphalt resurfacing, slurry seal, and signing and striping.
