Pierce and Bay Roads / Safe Routes to School Project

  • Project typeStreets and sidewalks
Depection of sidewalk with cracks and fainted painting for repair

This Project is identified in the City's Five-Year Street maintenance program and includes roadway improvements at Bay Road (from Van Buren Road to Ringwood Avenue), Pierce Road (from Carlton Avenue to Terminal Avenue), Safe Routes to School (SRTS) intersection upgrades at Oak Knoll Lane and Oak Avenue (near Oak Knoll Elementary School) and Sharon Road and Eastridge Avenue (near La Entrada Middle School).

Bay Road improvements generally include:

  • Application of slurry seal within the project limits
  • New signing and striping (including buffered bicycle lanes and high visibility crosswalks)
  • Minor concrete improvements (including valley gutters and curb ramps)
  • Speed hump installation

Pierce Road improvements generally include:

  • Slurry seal and asphalt resurfacing as shown per plan
  • Speed hump installation
  • Signing and striping (including shared bicycle markings and crosswalks).
  • Staff is recommending a no-stopping zone along the south side of Pierce Road (from Carlton to Del Norte Avenue) at the February 24 City Council meeting. Contingent upon City Council approval, the no-stopping zone would allow for a bicycle lane to be installed along Pierce Road in lieu of shared bicycle markings (where sufficient width allows).

Safe Routes to School Intersection Improvements

The scope of work generally includes new concrete curb extensions (bulb-outs), curb ramps, gutters, rapid flashing beacons (crossing Sharon Road), and signing and striping (including installation of high visibility crosswalks). All constructed improvements will be designed in accordance to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project will be constructed during school summer break to minimize disturbance to students.

Current status

Staff advertised the project for construction bids on Jan. 27. Construction is anticipated this summer contingent upon bids received. Please refer to the City's construction news update page for additional information.
