Ruby Bridges walking

For a fifth year, the City of Menlo Park is celebrating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day! The initiative of walking to school to commemorate Ruby Bridges’ story started locally in the County of San Mateo.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, schools in Menlo Park encourage families to walk to school.

A group of students from Martin Elementary in South San Francisco had the idea to name a day after Ruby Bridges to honor her legacy. In 2021, the State of California passed a resolution to proclaim Nov. 14 as Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. In 2022, over 343,000 students walked for Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges became a civil rights hero when she became the first person to integrate William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Today her story continues to inspire the next generation of leaders to end racism together one step at a time.
